Vom 15. bis 28. August 2000 finden in Aviles (Spanien) die diesjährigen Europameisterschaften der Jugend unter 20 Jahren statt.

Die Deutsche Schachjugend ist durch Elisabeth Pähtz (Foto), Gundula David bei den Mädchen und Fabian Döttling bei den Jungen vertreten. Betreut werden sie von Heinz Rätsch.
Die erste Runde findet am 16. August 2000 statt, wobei 38 Teilnehmerinnen bei den Mädchen und 68 Teilnehmer bei den Jungen starten.
Fabian (Foto rechts) gewinnt in der ersten Runde mit den schwarzen Steinen gegen Jose Ortega Ruiz.Elisabeth Pähtz - Rula Fernandez Blanco (1-0) und Gundula David - Viktorija Cmilyte (remis) lauten die Paarungen bei den Mädchen.
