Bericht von Vladimir Dembo aus Budapest

"First Saturday" in May included two tournaments: IM- and ELO-events. As a rule this month is very hard for students, schoolchildren and their teachers. Many of them couldn't come to play. But they already reserved places in the July-August competitions. In summer you may have a very good rest (to visit expositions in well-known museums, to go for a walk in beautiful parks) and play successfully in one-two tournaments.

There were 28 chess-players from 6 countries in these two events. In my opinion the most interesting player among them was Leonid Kritz-the World champion until 16. Not long ago he was Muscovite but during last three years he is the inhabitant of Germany. The World and European champions and prize-winners play very often in "First Saturday". T.Rajabov and A.Riazantsev, Bu X. and sisters Gara, Hoang T.T. and Y.Dembo, L.Vajda and his sister Sz.Vajda, already a big chess-player E.Sutovsky and Ni H.-all played more then once in Nagy Laszlo tournaments. They played, acquired knowledge, gained experience in this competitions and fulfilled IM- and GM-norms. Sometimes they lived here during many months and played until they made a great progress. It is very hard to come for only one event and immediately fulfil the norm.

It is very difficult but possible! In IM-event (III category, IM-norm 9,5 points, the average rating 2311) Leonid Kritz (GER, 2303) accomplished it! He began with the draw against N.Resika (USA, 2190). After that he won 7 games alternating winnings with draws very seldom. His rating isn't so high now, but Leonid may improve it very quickly: some good results in competitions - and all will be well. Leonid fulfilled the IM-norm in 13 games (10 points).

Another participator of this tournament - K.Pilgaard (DEN, 2377) did it in 12 games (the part norm). Both of them made a success! It wasn't clear until the last minutes of the last round who would be on the third place. At once 5 players had a chance to be a prize-winners. They were: L.Vadasz (HUN, GM, 2285), L.Eperjesi (HUN, IM, 2365), P.Froehlich (GER, 2375), A.Hoenig (GER, 2246), M.Geenin (BEL, 2358).

The results:

  1. L.Kritz (GER, 2303) - 10
  2. K.Pilgaard (DEN, 2377) - 9
3-6. IM L.Eperjesi (HUN, 2365),
     M.Geenin (BEL, 2358)
     GM L.Vadasz (HUN, 2285),
     P.Froehlich (GER, 2375) - 7,5

In the ELO-event (14 players, the average rating 2117):

1-2. I.Dombai (HUN, 2128),
     Z.Erdelyi (HUN, 2146) - 8,5
  3. P.Van Hoolandt (BEL, 2098) - 8
Congratulations for the prize-winners!
Good-bye!
Your Budapest correspondent V. Dembo
